Gandur is a range that has been developed by the family business Urðarköttur ehf. at Syðra-Skörðugil in Skagafjörður in Iceland. Here, fur animals, sheep and horses are bred, dressage and horse training is carried out. The family includes skilled riders, veterinarians, consultants, farmers and people who feel most comfortable when they are on horseback in nature.
Many years of knowledge and experience in treating animals are behind the development of the highly appreciated skin ointment for animals containing mink oil and hand-picked herbs.
"We have long known about the positive effect of mink oil on our skin and wanted to spread knowledge to others about the oil's special properties. We work according to the ideal that our animals need just as good products as we humans do and therefore place the same quality demands on ointments for animals as for humans."
Instead of polluting the environment by throwing away the fat produced during the preparation of mink skin, they use this by-product and produce mink oil, which benefits both humans and animals. The oil contains a particularly high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids (omega 3 and omega 6), which gives it its unique properties. It is a healing, softening and natural by-product that can be used on both animal and human skin. The oil is quickly absorbed by the skin and leaves a characteristic, velvety texture. Clinical studies have shown that mink oil can penetrate the fifth layer of the skin within an hour of being applied to the skin. However, it primarily stays on the outermost layer of the skin, where it moisturizes, softens and protects the skin.
In the ointments we add hand-picked Icelandic herbs as well as beeswax, vitamin E and essential oils. In the Icelandic flora there are many medicinal plants that have been used against various diseases in humans and animals throughout the ages. Here in Iceland there are a variety of effective medicinal plants and many of them contain active substances that work antibacterially, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.
The ointments are manufactured according to Icelandic and European regulations for cosmetics and have been tested and analyzed in collaboration with the Food and Biotechnology Institute Matís, with support from the Rannís Technology Development Fund, the Northwest Iceland Growth Agreement, Impra Innovation Guidance and the Agricultural Productivity Fund.
Everyone at Sydra-Skörðugil has contributed to the development of the range.
